Sentences on Conceptual Art
Agree:
#10: The statement agrees with my personal views on art because I believe an idea can be a work of art. The term “art” covers a very broad spectrum for me. I see an idea as a process as well as a creation. You, individually, are composing a sequence of thoughts in a specific order. A creation, in my opinion, is nothing short of a work of art.

#14: Speaking with other artists when working on art is always been a helpful task for me. I find that when saying ideas aloud it allows me to construct a more concrete thought. This is one reason why this statement proves true to me. Two artists speaking about the same concept could effectively bounce ideas off one another, therefore creating an idea chain.

Disagree:
#6: I often describe myself as an indecisive person. Consequently, I am constantly changing ideas midway through my work. The statement by Sol Lewitt does not agree with my thoughts of changing ideas half way through. I can admit there have been some times where the change of direction caused me to rush and it turned out less than expected. But I have also encountered times when a change of idea formed as I created the piece and ended up turning out great.

#35
As mentioned above, I have a very broad spectrum of thoughts on the term “art’. There are a vast amount of very different categories that could all fit characteristics of the word “art”. Sol claims the comments on conceptual art are not art but simply comments about art. I disagree because these are perceptive and meaningful sentences, especially to Sol Lewitt. These sentences are a series of individually formed ideas and would still fit into my understanding of the term “art”.

Function 1210 Week 1

Kate Gilmore, Love is an Anchor, 2004

Welcome to Function Art 1210 Spring 2014.  This blog will serve as a meeting ground for our class, ideas, responses, work, other artist's work, etc.  We will connect with each others' blogs from here, as well.

This week we will look at Sol Lewitt's Sentences on Conceptual Art, 1969- Link HERE
and post to your respective blogs your responses: 2 in agreement and why and 2 in disagreement and why.  The link that I provided is the actual letter written by Lewitt and is pretty interesting.
